Contemporary libraries need state-of-the-art software to make their collections and services visible and attractive to Web users accustomed to the one stop-shopping aspects of Google and the customer-oriented features of commercial sites such as Amazon.
Villanova University's Falvey Memorial Library has harnessed the power of contemporary Web search technology to develop an open-source resource discovery portal – VUFIND – that enables users to query and browse the library's resources in a simple yet sophisticated manner.
VUFIND is a "next generation catalog" that empowers users by supporting personalization and social networking services such as tagging and peer-to-peer comment sharing. Users can save and organize their key resources in a personal information workspace. Searching is done with astonishing speed and offers the ability to browse and narrow search results by specific fields or combinations of fields.
VUFIND is modular in design, allowing a variety of implementations. It also incorporates a "driver" oriented communication interface that allows it to interact with library management software of any type for access to item status, holdings, and other similar information. And because it is open source, libraries can modify the modules to best fit theirs needs or add new modules to extend their resource offerings.
VUFIND is built on a number of leading-edge open source application frameworks, most notably Apache Solr. The Solr search engine offers quick response times, scalability and flexibility. By incorporating this framework, VUFIND provides an extremely effective search and retrieve system with low upfront investment and a capacity for handling very large data sets.
VUFIND is currently developed and maintained by Villanova University's Falvey Memorial Library technology staff.
