Press Release: [January 11, 2010]

Abstract: D2D allows users to search across multiple catalogs and targets to find items held by their library and library partners. Targets may include subscription databases and other options such as Google Books, WorldCat, and Amazon. The key to D2D is to optimize the user’s ability to discover items of interest and get immediate access to or request delivery of the material with minimal or no intervention by library staff. Material may be supplied locally, from within a consortium or consortia or via traditional ILL. D2D supports the requesting, delivery and receipt of both returnable and non-returnable items. Delivery options include Ariel, Odyssey, Post-to-Web, email attachment, and fax.

Clare MacKeigan, COO of Relais International, says D2D provides a standards based, open system for library staff and users that offers a framework upon which new services and options can be offered to users." She adds, "We are excited to provide our next-generation software platform to the library community. Our first customer is Borrow Direct, a service for faculty, staff and students of Brown, Columbia, Cornell, Dartmouth, University of Pennsylvania, Princeton and Yale."

Discovery is based on the MasterKey Platform from Index Data that provides a fully featured discovery layer for users. A ‘live' availability check will notify the user immediately as to whether the material they want can be supplied from their library or from a partner library. Should the material not be available, the user has the option to submit a request for processing via traditional ILL.

Relais request management will provide the ability for staff to update requests as appropriate. The system will automatically notify users at key points in the process. Interoperability with other systems in the library is an integral part of D2D. For example, automatic circulation updates will be provided via NCIP, SIP2, ESIP, and proprietary means as required.

D2D is built and developed as an open system, interfacing and interoperating with other tools and services used in libraries. This provides libraries with the option to select and use ‘best of breed' and link the discovery to delivery process as an integral part of library services. Interfacing and interoperability is provided to a host of Integrated Library Systems, Resource Sharing Systems and Document Suppliers.
