Emeryville, CA. Innovative announced today that Hillsdale College (MI) is now live on the Sierra Services Platform for all its staff-side library functions, as well as full integration with its Encore discovery application. Sierra is now offering a single administration app tailored to the needs of each user, along with the power of open architecture that positions the library for the future. Hillsdale College's Mossey Library is among 275 academic libraries that have selected Sierra to date.
"The most impressive features of Sierra are its single interface for administration and the potential the SQL back-end has for us," says Maurine McCourry, Librarian for Technical Services. "Logging in and seeing all the relevant applications in the Sierra Dashboard at once is streamlining our workflow. On the back-end, we will eventually make significant use of the database and its granular-level data are going to be very beneficial. We are excited at the prospect of being part of a community of libraries creating and sharing scripts and applications."
Library staff have already added a custom gadget to the Sierra Dashboard for its 30 student workers. When they log into the Sierra Dashboard, they are presented with applications they need for their jobs plus a custom gadget that allows them to log in and count their work hours on an external system.
Hillsdale College has a long and productive relationship with Innovative that dates back to 1995. For the Sierra initiative, it was among the first group of development partners. Says McCourry: "Our selection of Sierra as our next platform reflects our desire to stay on the cutting edge of technology and have the best possible options for library services in the future. We all think that Innovative is the premier partner for libraries."
Says Vice President of Product Management and Encore Division John McCullough: "Sierra has delivered on the promise of providing a platform for libraries that has complete library functionality in a modern toolkit, along with an extensible architecture that supports library development and innovation. We were delighted that Hillsdale College has already developed new gadgets to customize their Sierra dashboard for staff! With this open platform in place we're looking forward to collaborating with our partners to take every Sierra Library into the future."
Innovative staff worked closely with Hillsdale College, including site visits by Product Manager Ken Wells and Vice President of Product Development Hilary Newman. "We really appreciate Hillsdale College's contributions and engagement during the development phase," says Newman. "They offered very strong support for the solutions Sierra delivers them, as well as critical feedback on usability, the implementation process, and overall functionality which we have incorporated back into the software and rollout processes." Innovative will continue to work closely with Hillsdale College and the rest of its developer community, and expects general release of Sierra later in 2012.
