Abstract: VTLS has expanded its Drupal consulting and development services under a new name: Vorpal Solutions. The change resulted from an increasing interest in Drupal in the library community as libraries look for ways to take advantage of the power and flexibility of the open-source Drupal CMS. Vorpal Solutions covers a range of services to help libraries with their Drupal projects, ranging from integrating OPAC functions with a Drupal-based website to consulting services to help organization’s in-house Drupal designer improve features and performance.

Blacksburg, VA- VTLS has expanded its Drupal consulting and development services under a new name: Vorpal Solutions. The change resulted from an increasing interest in Drupal in the library community as libraries look for ways to take advantage of the power and flexibility of the open-source Drupal CMS. Vorpal Solutions covers a range of services to help libraries with their Drupal projects, ranging from integrating OPAC functions with a Drupal-based website to consulting services to help organization's in-house Drupal designer improve features and performance.

VTLS has worked with several libraries since 2009, providing them with solutions or technical help including:

  • Queens Borough Public Library– VTLS developed Drupal APIs to support the library's Drupal development team and performed consulting services aimed at improving stability, functionality and performance.
  • Virginia College of Osteopathic Medicine and National Centre for Vocational Education Research (NCVER, Australia) – VTLS delivered a complete Drupal-based public interface to provide access to multimedia content stored in a VITAL Digital Asset Management System (VOCED and OSTMED).
  • Université Catholique Lille (France) – Implementing Drupal design and development services (in progress) to provide a unified public interface to the library's ILS (Virtua).
  • Kansas City Public Library –The most recent Vorpal Solutions contract involved the development of Drupal-based microsites to showcase the library's digital collections as well as providing support for the library-developed Drupal-based website.

"The response we have received from our customers has been overwhelmingly positive," Rose-Anne Polver, librarian with NCVER said, "We chose the VTLS product because, at the time, it best met our requirements. NCVER's project proved to be complex and challenging. VTLS worked diligently with us to achieve our goals. We are enjoying using our new system and feedback from our VOCEDplus end-users continues to be very positive."

Dr. Vinod Chachra, CEO of VTLS said, "Drupal is increasingly the platform of choice by libraries. It provides a rich set of options and tremendous flexibility in providing unique solutions to libraries and businesses alike. VTLS has assembled a talented team to help implement and support Drupal based systems in their organizations."

The name Vorpal Solutions emerged from the view that libraries could use VTLS's Drupal expertise in a variety of ways to overcome obstacles they faced. The word "vorpal" was used in the Lewis Carroll poem Jabberwocky to describe the keen and devastatingly effective sword used to slay an intimidating beast.
