DUBLIN, Ohio, USA, 17 August 2012. OCLC has successfully completed implementation of the WorldCat Local shared discovery service for AdamNet, a consortium of over 30 libraries in greater Amsterdam, the Netherlands. With WorldCat Local, libraries in the region have enhanced the ability of their users—as well as users around the globe—to access their unique materials. AdamNet's shared discovery service is currently in production for 14 of its member libraries.
In WorldCat Local, AdamNet found a successor to its traditional group catalogue, Digital Library Amsterdam, and more.
"WorldCat Local shared discovery offers participating libraries great additional value because they have already loaded their collections in WorldCat," said Hans van Velzen, chairman of AdamNet and CEO of the Public Library Amsterdam. "OCLC's partnerships with popular search engines and websites such as Google, Google Books and Google Scholar, add visibility to our members' collections. This means that Web searchers will find resources in member library collections on Web sites where they often begin their research."
"Also, with our new shared discovery service, we can search all our collections at once and see what is available at individual member libraries. And more institutions can join quickly and easily," continued Mr. van Velzen.
"AdamNet offers a unique combination of collections from academic, public library and cultural heritage institutions," says Eric van Lubeek, Managing Director, OCLC EMEA. "These materials represent the best of our culture and will undoubtedly be of interest to a global audience."
WorldCat Local shared discovery is created, in part, from records catalogued in WorldCat. Library records in the Netherlands are contributed to WorldCat via a synchronisation gateway that updates in real-time as libraries catalogue in the Dutch union catalogue, the GGC. Data contributed to WorldCat is made accessible via the OCLC WorldShare Platform for re-use through Web services, like the WorldCat Search API and through syndication with partners. A full list of syndication partners can be found on the OCLC website.

AdamNet is a network of libraries in the Amsterdam area. Together, the over 30 AdamNet libraries have millions of books, thousands of magazines, various multimedia and much more available. Access to the AdamNet libraries is free, but for borrowing and in some cases for accessing literature, a membership is needed. Some AdamNet libraries have a combined card: the AdamNet Card.
