SEATTLE, January 24, 2013 – Polaris Library Systems, a pioneer in the development of library technology solutions for public, private and academic libraries, plans to unveil a revolutionary public access catalog (PAC) at ALA Midwinter in Seattle. Polaris Social fully integrates the enriched functionality of the Polaris PowerPAC with a vast array of social networking features from the ChiliFresh platforms that are designed specifically for book enthusiasts.
"By integrating the enriched functionality of the Polaris PAC with the social networking platforms of ChiliFresh, Polaris Social really brings together the best of both worlds," said Polaris president and CEO, Bill Schickling. "People who love reading now have one place to go to find and access books and materials, as well as communicate and share book ideas with people from around the globe. That place is the library's catalog."
With a single sign-on, users can search the PAC for books they would like to read and then share and create personal bookshelves right from the search results. Patrons can also comment and participate in discussions at the item level within the catalog, share the item on Twitter, Facebook or other places, and recommend the title to others within the ChiliFresh and Polaris networks. Polaris Social also enables users to see related items as well as related users based on their search results.
"What's so exciting about Polaris Social is that we've made the library catalog the gateway to everything a reader could possibly need," said Steven Nielsen, vice president of product management for Polaris. "Access to finding and obtaining books and materials, as well as a place to go to learn, discuss and explore new books and ideas with people from around the globe. This is really the next generation of the library catalog."
A "Connections" section of the catalog enables patrons to set up a user profile and bookshelf to share with others around the world. As with any mainstream social networking platform, users can send and view invitations, find and follow friends and read and create reviews and posts. Users can also join book clubs and chat rooms for real-time interaction within the catalog.
"With a complete integration of the ChiliFresh platforms, Polaris Social offers a socially connected and feature-rich online catalog experience," said ChiliFresh president and CEO Scott Johnson. "We're very excited to partner with Polaris and look forward to continuing to enhance and expand the social features of the Polaris catalog in the months and years to come."
