SEATTLE, January 25, 2013 — Polaris Library Systems, a trusted provider of technology solutions that help public, private and academic librarians serve their communities, is exhibiting at the American Library Association (ALA) Midwinter Meeting in Seattle. In booth number 2403, attendees will see demonstrations of the Polaris ILS version 4.1 and the now live 3M Cloud Library eBook integration, its new social media integration with Chilifresh Connections, and two-way information exchange with Community Profiles. In addition, attendees can meet and speak with Polaris staff, including the newest Polaris staff member, Neil Block.
In 2012, nearly half of the Polaris customer base upgraded to Polaris 4.1, the latest version of the ILS software. Among the new features that customers are enjoying is the new Polaris PowerPAC interface, which provides customers with content carousels, recently viewed titles, and the ability to feature new titles. Also new in Polaris 4.1 is Community Profiles, a unique service for libraries and their patrons to connect with local organizations and events via the catalog. It allows for the exchange of content between community organizations and the library, facilitating cross-promotion and offering patrons additional services and support.
As Polaris continues to enhance Polaris version 4.1, more customers will upgrade in 2013 to take advantage of new services and functionality. In a recent update to Polaris 4.1, the Polaris PowerPAC now provides easy access to owned and licensed information resources through an integrated federated search capability, with a new Search Status screen that displays the selected databases and retrieval results in real time. The most recent release update to Polaris 4.1 provides the 3M Cloud Library eBook integration, making Polaris the industry's first catalog with fully integrated eBooks. With this integration, patrons will be able to view, check out and place holds on 3M eBooks, all without leaving the library's PAC.
In an upcoming addition to Polaris 4.1, social media services provided through a partnership with ChiliFresh will be integrated into the Polaris PowerPAC. A preview of this new service, Polaris Social will be demonstrated in the Polaris booth #2403. With Polaris Social, the library's catalog becomes a gateway to a worldwide network of book enthusiasts, allowing patrons to share the books they read, see what others are reading, and discover new books based on the social network connected to a title.
"It's amazing that only a year ago at Midwinter we were talking about a lot of these products and now, all of them have been developed, and most are live in the field," said Steven Nielsen, vice president of product management. "The speed at which we are able to go from concept to completion really speaks to our company's passion for creating products that will truly transform libraries."
Attendees can see demonstrations of all of the aforementioned products in the Polaris booth #2403 at ALA Midwinter.
Since the 2012 ALA Midwinter Meeting, Polaris has hired 16 new employees in virtually every department, including customer support, sales, marketing and implementations. Its newest employee, Neil Block, brings over 25 years of library automation experience through his long tenure with Innovative Interfaces, Inc (III), where he most recently served as president of the company. Now, Block joins Polaris as the vice president of strategic growth, a new position designed to uncover new opportunities and accelerate the company's already impressive growth.
Block, and several Polaris staff members, will be at ALA Midwinter and attendees can visit with them in the Polaris booth, #2403.
