About Fort Scott Public Library

During the Civil War, Fort Scott, Kansas was a key city for the U.S. military as it served as the U.S. Army district headquarters, training center, and recruitment station. Following the Civil War, Fort Scott became a premiere city of the frontier and one of the largest cities in eastern Kansas. Following strong population growth, industrialist Andrew Carnegie donated $18,000 to Fort Scott to fund the Fort Scott Public Library. Construction began in 1901 and continued until 1904. In 1987, the Public Library was placed on the National Register of Historic Places.
