Cuadra Associates, developer of the ST AR information management software, has announced a new library automation product designed to meet the needs and budgets of small and medium-size libraries.
Cuadra/ILS (Integrated Library System) packages a version of the award-winning Cuadra STAR software with the STAR/Libraries application, which provides a full array of features and capabilities needed by most libraries but excludes STAR's application design tools for customizing the application.
STAR/Libraries is a ready-to-use, task-oriented application that supports acquisitions, cataloging (MARC and non-MARC), online public access catalog (OPAC), serials, request management, and circulation. It comes with many predefined reports, including bibliography and catalog formats; columnar reports sorted by author, subject, title, and other criteria; claims reports for both serials and acquisitions; and statistical and other management reports. For the OPAC, one can use either STAR's Windows-based graphical user interface or its Web browser interface, to provide full retrieval power with CA's unique, easy-to-use assisted searching.
"Over the years, as we have added new capabilities to our library application, we have found that it meets more and more of the needs of libraries, right out of the box. II said Dr. Carlos A. Cuadra, president of Cuadra Associates. "This either eliminates or sharply reduces the need for the libraries to do any customization. "
Cuadra pointed out that, with the downsizing of libraries that has been occurring in corporate America, the staff resources or the funds to do the kind of customizing that was popular in years past are no longer readily available.
According to Cuadra, many companies have been persuaded that all of the information they need to have is findable on the Web, without the need for librarians and information specialists. This faulty appraisal of the realities of efficient and effective knowledge management has led to the closing of numerous business and technical libraries and/or to the reduction of their staff and budget.
"That's what makes the new Cuadra/ILS product an attractive option for small libraries and information centers," he said. "The price of the product starts at under $10,000 in the U.S. and Canada and includes conversion of the customer's USMARC bibliographic data, two days of training, and a year of upgrades and customer support."
Like the fully customizable version of STAR, Cuadra/ILS runs on a number of UNIX platforms and on Windows NT and Windows 2000 servers. Customers who later decide to customize the product to meet new or unique requirements have the option of purchasing the STAR customizing toolkit.
Cuadra Associates' STAR software was designed specifically to provide fast access to descriptive information of all kinds. It can be used in a variety of information management applications, by libraries, film and document archives, museums, law offices, publishers, and corporate information and records centers. STAR's records management application has been certified by the Department of Defense as compliant with 000 5015.2-STD. This standard has also been endorsed by the National Archives and Records Administration for use by other Federal agencies.
STAR is sold through CA's corporate headquarters in Los Angeles, sales offices in Washington, D.C. and New York, and authorized resellers in other countries.
