ANN ARBOR, MI, October 28, 2013 - ProQuest Senior Director Richard Huffine has been awarded the 2013-2014 Distinguished Career Alumni Award from the University of North Carolina-Greensboro School of Education. Dr. Clara Chu and the Library and Information Science faculty at the University nominated Mr. Huffine, who leads outreach for ProQuest to the U.S. Federal Government Market. The award recognizes exemplary service to one's profession.

"We're delighted to congratulate Richard on this well-deserved recognition," said Kurt Sanford, ProQuest CEO. "His incredible energy and passion for libraries has made and will continue to make an important contribution to evolving this important profession."

Mr. Huffine, a third-generation librarian, joined ProQuest in 2013 from the U.S. Federal Government, where he was Library Director at the U.S. Geological Survey. His career with the Federal Government spanned 15 years, starting with a role as Internet Librarian and progressing to National Library Coordinator at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. He then went on to serve as a Web Analytics Manager for the General Services Administration before joining the Geological Survey.

Throughout the library world, Mr. Huffine is known for his leadership in professional associations and his tireless advocacy for public and special libraries locally, nationally and globally. In 2004, he was the founding Chair of a new Government Information Division within the Special Libraries Association. He has also served as chair of the American Library Association's Federal and Armed Forces Libraries Round Table, the District of Columbia Library Association and currently serves on the Board of Directors of the Special Libraries Association. Mr. Huffine was also the President of the Mount Pleasant (DC) Friends of the Library and President of the Federation of Friends of the District of Columbia Public Library. He is currently on the nomination slate to serve on the council of the American Library Association.

His many achievements in these roles include the development of a new community for discourse on the challenges of managing government information; advocacy with community leaders that led to a $16 million renovation to his former neighborhood branch library; and discovery of a rare volume in the USGS Library that documents the existence of four now-lost pieces of Russian Crown Jewels, never previously seen in photographs.

Mr. Huffine was honored during the 2013-2014 Alumni Awards Celebration on Saturday, October 26, 2013.
