As part of a plan to deliver an improved experience for staff and students using the library and information service, the Irish Hospice Foundation has chosen the Koha open source library management system to replace its existing Heritage system. Interleaf Technology has been contracted to implement the Koha system and to provide on-going support services.

Koha Library Management System

With the Koha LMS, library staff access to the system is completely web-based: Searching, circulation, cataloguing, serials and reports, acquisitions and EDI are all performed using a web browser.

The online catalogue offers an excellent search capability and a full range of personalisation services. Koha's depth of functionality continues to evolve and expand to meet the changing needs of its user base.

Laura Rooney Ferris, Information & Library Manager said: "I had been putting off changing Library Management systems for a couple of years under the assumption it would be a very time consuming and costly experience. Interleaf were very accommodating of my budget and as a solo librarian I was really pleased to be able to hand over the system migration and have it handled so quickly and efficiently, so in the end it was a very smooth transition process."

Charles Quain, Director at Interleaf Technology added: "We are delighted to be working with the Irish Hospice Foundation. Open Source Technologies and hosted solutions allow institutions with limited resources access to state-of-the art technology while achieving value for money. Our scaled support options means that libraries are not paying for levels of support that they don't need."

About The Irish Hospice Foundation

The Irish Hospice Foundation was set up in 1986 to fund and help develop specific hospice services. Over time, their work has expanded to embrace the needs of people dying in hospitals, at home and in other care settings, as well as those who cannot easily access hospice care because of the nature of their illness.

The Irish Hospice Foundation also promote discussion of a broad range of issues related to dying, death and bereavement, in order to identify what matters most to Irish people at the end of life, and how best to address their concerns.
