January 24, 2014 -- Emeryville, CA. Innovative announced today that it will give a first look at two new capabilities that leverage the Sierra Library Services Platform to create staff efficiencies and tailor the user experience: REST APIs for Discovery and interactive Mobile WorkLists. Both capabilities take advantage of Sierra's open systems that provide integration of external services and native support for modern workflows.
Streamlined workflows are a key focus in Sierra and mobile capabilities offer new opportunities for efficiency. Mobile WorkLists combines the power of interactive lists with the convenience of mobile access to reduce time spent handling materials and remove manual steps that take staff away from service duties.
Designed for clear display on iPad, smartphone, other small screen device, Mobile Worklists includes paging lists for filling requests or finding missing items, in-the-stacks record updates, scanning items to build ad-hoc lists, and more. Staff will save paper - no lists to print - and make real time updates to the Sierra system. The built-in hardware capabilities of these familiar devices simplify workflow and require less peripheral hardware. And with a focus on usability and a native user experience, Sierra Mobile Worklists is as elegant as any popular mobile app.
Available for a first look at ALA Midwinter 2014, Mobile WorkLists opens the door for end-to-end workflows away from the desk.
Also at ALA Midwinter 2014, Innovative will be previewing REST API capabilities for Sierra libraries who wish to integrate local collection data into external services. Built on open architecture with simple access to library data, Sierra supports libraries' choice to build their own tools or integrate services from different providers to provide the best solutions for their users. Sierra's REST APIs, offer the easiest and most standardized way for developers to exercise their creativity and make the most of their library's data. Early partner libraries and vendors have access to interact with the pre-release version of the APIs in a developer sandbox environment.
The ALA Midwinter preview showcases services that power harvesting & real-time availability for Web and mobile discovery, and they represent just the first in a new suite of API services. Going forward, Sierra APIs will provide sophisticated integration for patron empowerment functions, while opening possibilities for library developers who want to create apps for mobile devices and generate custom reports.
"The Sierra Services Platform provides a strong and unique foundation for efficient operations and choice, as we are showing with the APIs and Mobile Worklists," says VP of Product Management Brad Jung. "Sierra is built to be open, meaning that library data is available to staff and open to connect with outside systems. Our libraries have just scratched the surface of the countless possibilities this technology enables."
