Blacksburg, VA – The Russian International Olympic University (RIOU), located in Sochi (home of the 2014 Winter Olympic Games), has recently purchased the VITAL Digital Asset Management System to manage the library's digital content, and Chamo Discovery to provide public access to both VITAL and its Virtua integrated library system (ILS). These new implementations are part of the second phase in RIOU's library project, following the installation of the Virtua ILS in December 2012. Also, as a part of its second phase, RIOU has added Virtua Acquisitions, Serials Control, the SIP2/NCIP interface and additional user licenses.
RIOU is a new university that was built in conjunction with the Olympics' facilities in Sochi. The library features a substantial collection of literature on the history and development of the Olympic movement and sports management, aligning with the University's curriculum. The initial phase involved the implementation of staff functions to start building the library's catalog using Virtua. VITAL will be used to keep the Olympics' legacy material as a repository on the history of the Olympic Games and sports in general. Materials will include content collected from other institutions. Chamo will provide unified discovery of both physical library materials and digital content.
The Russian International Olympic University was founded on October 21, 2009 by the Russian Government and in cooperation with the International Olympic Committee, the Sochi 2014 Organizing Committee and the Russian Olympic Committee. The University Board of Trustees is headed by the President of the Russian Federation and consists of several international dignitaries including Prince Albert of Monaco and Sergey Lavrov, the Russian Foreign Minister. RIOU is actively oriented to the training of highly qualified specialists in the field of sports management for the Russian and global sports industries and the Olympic and Paralympic movement.
