March 4, 2014 -- Emeryville, CA. Innovative announced today that Trinity College Dublin (Ireland) has upgraded to the Sierra Library Services Platform. The new open-architecture platform will allow them to meet the challenges posed by data and resource-discovery in today's library and information ecosystem. The largest research library in Ireland, it was previously using the Millennium ILS.
Jessie Kurtz, Acting Librarian, says: "The Library's mission to support the learning and research needs of Trinity College Dublin and its role as a Legal Deposit Library presents a diverse range of requirements and challenges to be addressed by our Library Management System. Our decision to upgrade from Millennium to Sierra was driven in large part by the design approach adopted by Innovative."
Arlene Healy, Sub-librarian for Digital Systems and Services explains: "The open-architecture PostgreSQL database structure frees us to consider innovative solutions for discovery of digital library content—including the hundreds of thousands of articles, journals and eBooks accessible to our readers through the extension of UK Legal Deposit to electronic publications. The scale of the data and resource discovery challenges presented is unprecedented and Sierra allows us to engage with the content in ways not previously possible. Finally, Sierra's unified staff application provides the flexibility and cross functionality which supports the evolution of the Library's workflows and business processes."
"We are now seeing libraries around the world adopt the Sierra platform as the bridge that will connect their complete data and workflows with the larger technology environment," says VP of Product Management Brad Jung. "Only Sierra can provide a total solution that includes the ability to interact with applications and systems in new and creative ways."
The Library of Trinity College Dublin is the largest research Library in Ireland with over six million printed volumes, extensive collections of journals, and internationally significant holdings of manuscripts, early printed material including music and more than half a million maps, reflecting over four hundred years of academic development. More recently, it has established a collection of over 80,000 electronic journals, and 300,000 electronic books. The Digital Collections repository provides online access to over 9,000 digitised collections. It has been a legal deposit library for Ireland and the United Kingdom since 1801. The Library's collections and services support the College's research and teaching community of 17,000 students and academic staff.
