BLACKSBURG, Va. – Kansas City Public Library's (KCPL) Civil War on the Western Border website, www.civilwaronthewesternborder.org, developed in collaboration with VTLS Inc., won the 2014 Award for Excellence in Public History from the Society of Civil War Historians. The $5,000 award recognizes the Civil War on the Western Border website as an outstanding public history project that improves public awareness and understanding of the Civil War era.
VTLS was excited to hear of the achievement and proud to be part of the Civil War on the Western Border project. "In many ways, this is a groundbreaking website and fully deserving of this wonderful recognition," stated Dr. Vinod Chachra, President and CEO of VTLS. "The staff at KCPL along with project advisors and contributing partners formed an effective team that brought creativity and expertise to the project. We have enjoyed this collaborative partnership with KCPL and hope to continue to work together on other demanding and creative projects." David LaCrone, KCPL's Digital Branch Manager, said the project members "wanted to create an innovative digital history resource and were very ambitious in designing the functionality of the website. The development team at VTLS was able to accommodate us every step of the way, devising ways to implement all of our design concepts." VTLS worked closely with KCPL's team to produce a dynamic and interactive user experience. The website includes an interactive timeline and map as well as an innovative relationship viewer. The relationship viewer lets users see connections between Civil War people, places, groups and events while exploring historic documents, photographs, maps and essays. VTLS looks forward to more Drupal website projects that take advantage of linked data to promote their unique collections.
