Ipswich, MA -- June 16, 2014. Choosing Wisely Canada recommendations are now available through the evidence-based clinical decision support tool DynaMed from EBSCO Health. Having the recommendations as a part of DynaMed gives healthcare providers access to valuable information at the point of care.
Choosing Wisely Canada aims to help physicians and patients make smart and effective choices to ensure high-quality care by having conversations about unnecessary tests, treatments and procedures. The recommendations are the result of Canadian national specialty societies identifying tests, treatments, or procedures that are commonly used but not supported by evidence and/or could expose patients to unnecessary harm.
Choosing Wisely Canada is modeled after the Choosing Wisely campaign in the United States, an initiative of the ABIM Foundation. The Canadian campaign has been developed in partnership with the Canadian Medical Association and involves more than 30 specialty societies. The recommendations are not meant to be used to establish coverage decisions or exclusions but to spur conversations about what is appropriate and necessary treatment.
Recommendations can currently be found in the "Choosing Wisely Canada" topic in DynaMed. Additionally, the Canadian Medical Association and DynaMed editors are working together to determine how to best integrate the recommendations into the relevant individual topics in a way that maximizes their visibility in the flow of patient care where they are most needed.
The specialty societies that are providing the recommendations for Choosing Wisely Canada are:
- Canadian Association of General Surgeons
- Canadian Association of Radiologists
- Canadian Cardiovascular Society
- Canadian Geriatrics Society
- Canadian Orthopaedic Association
- Canadian Rheumatology Association
- Canadian Society of Internal Medicine
- Canadian Medical Association's Forum on General and Family Practice Issues
- College of Family Physicians of Canada
