July 15, 2014 -- Emeryville, CA. The Library of Michigan has implemented Encore Duet as a unified discovery-to-discovery tool for its digital library, the Michigan eLibrary (MeL). Included are large and diverse print collections, digital repositories, as well as articles from Gale Cengage Learning and eBooks provided by EBSCO Information Services. Innovative and EBSCO Discovery Service (EDS) partnered to harvest and index MeL's digital repositories to tightly integrate with Encore Duet browse results and the sophisticated facet scheme offered by EDS. Libraries that purchase Encore Duet are combining the best of the best resources from Innovative and EBSCO to provide end users with a unique discovery experience.
Tailored to the Community
First launched in 2005, as the shared statewide catalog component of the Michigan eLibrary, MeLCat provides access to any of over 47 million items from 435 libraries in Michigan. The participating libraries include academic, public, school, and special libraries. In addition to these local physical collections, MeL now offers integrated searching of selected Michigan digital repositories through Encore Duet, greatly expanding the reach and ease of access for users. The 15 harvested collections include the Civil War Diaries Collection, Early Detroit Images, Great Lakes Maritime Database, Michigan County Histories and Atlases, Polar Bear Expedition Digital Collections, Virtual Motor City, and the War of 1812 Digitization Project.
Encore Duet provides patron-initiated requesting of physical items through MeL's continuing use of Innovative's INN-Reach consortial resource sharing solution. MeLCat boasts a 90% fill rate for patron requests; and, in 2012, became the first INN-Reach customer to handle more than one million such requests in a single calendar year. Anyone can search MeLCat, but only participating Michigan library cardholders can request materials for delivery.
Facilitated by Innovative, the full-text articles and eBooks available via the Encore Duet discovery service are immediately accessible via Geo-IP authentication in Michigan. When Michigan residents are out of state, they can simply access these resources by entering their Michigan driver's license, State of Michigan ID or participating MeLCat library card.
"MeL continues to provide outstanding content and services to all Michigan residents," says Randy Riley, State Librarian. "We are taking a step forward with the support of Innovative and EBSCO by now providing access that is simpler for users and broader and deeper in information assets. We are excited about incorporating full text article results into the new discovery service, while also highlighting MeLCat's physical collections and the newly harvested digital special collections."
"The Library of Michigan is a visionary organization that has created a unique offering for the state of Michigan's residents," says Hilary Newman, Vice President, Customer Engagement at Innovative. "They've succeeded in creating the necessary vendor and organizational relationships to make an amazing complement of eResources available in the Michigan eLibrary. Innovative and EBSCO have been part of taking MeL to the next level, and I believe that this can be a trend-setting arrangement for other communities. By taking advantage of resource sharing to the fullest, they can get more subscription resources to more Michigan residents than ever before."
"This implementation is a great showcase of vendor collaboration that benefits its library users," says EBSCO's Gar Sydnor, Vice President of Discovery Innovations, Schools and Public Libraries. "EBSCO, Innovative, and the MeL teams worked together to create a seamless discovery environment and the end-result speaks for itself Ė a fully integrated search experience that delivers seamless, convenient access to quality resources."
