The Caldwell Research Club was organized October 4, 1899. The members collected books for a reading room above the Fossett store. Later, this collection of about 600 books was moved to the city hall. Andrew Carnegie agreed to furnish $7000 to the city of Caldwell to erect a free public library building. The Caldwell Carnegie Library was one of 59 public libraries constructed in Kansas at a cost to Carnegie of $874,996. Today the library is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
