Fromberg, Mont., April 20. Gateway Software Corporation (GSC) today announced plans to release Java client versions of its popular AS/400 administrative solutions used by primary and secondary schools across the nation. GSC selected J Walk(TM), the AS/400 developer's toolkit from SEAGULL, for building Windows and Java GUI clients.
J Walk helps organizations leverage their investment in AS/400 applications, supporting emerging technologies like Java and offering the ability to add new functionality, Web-enable, integrate with other applications and enhance workflow while leaving the underlying code untouched. This new release will make GSC one of the first vendors to deploy a cost- effective, enterprisewide information system in a graphical client/server environment supporting Java, Windows and network computers (NCs) for the education market. GSC products include solutions for warehouse management, facilities maintenance, vehicle maintenance, library and textbook management, and media booking.
Because school districts are concerned about shrinking budgets and escalating costs, moving GSC's distribution and media management systems to Java-based delivery over NCs makes good economic sense, according to Rick Brown, GSC president. GSC is optimizing the new version for use with the Series 1000 Network Station, IBM's latest offering in the NC market.
"We are witnessing sweeping changes in the technology industry," Brown said. "People are realizing that there are powerful, less expensive alternatives for their computing infrastructure. Thanks to J Walk, we'll be able to offer our customers access to these infrastructures quickly and cost- effectively."
Over time, schools can save significant amounts of money because NCs have lower purchase prices and administration costs, according to Brown. "There's not much need for a person working in the warehouse or school bus garage to have an expensive, high-powered PC on their desk when NCs provide an excellent, low-cost method to access the power and reliability of the AS/400," he added. "And with J Walk, we can give users a rich, graphical interface that increases usability and user satisfaction, as well as supporting new technology -- it's the best of both worlds."
