NFAIS releases draft discovery service code of practice for review and comment

(February 1, 2012). The National Federation of Advanced Information Services has posted a draft Discovery Service Code of Practice for review and comment by March 16, 2012. NFAIS believes that discovery services have the potential to provide ease of information discovery, access, and use, benefitting not only its member organizations, but also the global community of information seekers. However, the relative newness of these services has generated questions and concerns among information providers and librarians as to how these services meet expectations with regard to issues related to traditional search and retrieval services; e.g. usage reports, ranking algorithms, content coverage, updates, product identification, etc. Accordingly, this document has been developed to assist those who choose to use this new distribution channel through the provision of guidelines that will help avoid the disruption of the delicate balance of interests involved.

Japan's National Diet Library goes live with Aleph

(January 31, 2012). Ex Libris announced that in early January, the National Diet Library—the national library of Japan—completed its transition from its legacy system to the Aleph integrated library system and switched to full production. The selection of the Aleph system followed an extensive process during which the NDL staff examined both local and international solutions and conducted an Aleph trial for eight months. The Aleph implementation project, which began in 2010, was one of the largest Aleph projects to date. For the first time, the various systems of NDL, including the former integrated library system, the Asian Language Materials catalog, and the ZASSHIKIJISAKUIN Japanese Periodicals Index, were merged into one system. In addition, the implementation had to accommodate the great size of the library collections (about 20 million bibliographic records and 40 million items); handle the Japanese language efficiently; support the unique workflows of the NDL; adapt to an advanced infrastructure; and integrate the system with technologies of other providers. Close collaboration with local system integrators was instrumental in accomplishing these tasks.

NISO publishes new recommended practice on Physical Delivery of Library Resources

(January 19, 2012). The National Information Standards Organization announces the publication of the new recommended practice: Physical Delivery of Library Resources (NISO RP-12-2012). The physical delivery of library materials is an integral component of the library resource sharing process. Despite the ever-increasing availability of electronic journals, e-books, and other digital resources, the movement of physical items remains a major concern and a major cost for many libraries. In one state, borrowing of returnable items increased by 107.4% in six years. A recent study showed that the average academic library spends more than $6,800/year for delivery services, with some libraries paying as high as $60,000. Given such volumes, libraries are struggling to deal with the labor and equipment costs, material wear and tear, and transit and sorting needs. Physical Delivery of Library Resources focuses on three key areas: the physical move, automation, and the management of physical delivery. While the scope of the document is limited to the external delivery of items between separately administered libraries, many of the recommendations could apply to delivery between branches of a single library system, as well. Ranging from labeling and containers to automation and contracting with courier services, this Recommended Practice addresses both the lending and the borrowing library's activities related to delivering and returning a physical item.

Expert Advisory Group makes its recommendations for open data in Alma

(January 19, 2012). Ex Libris announced that the international group of library experts who convened to advise Ex Libris on the Community Catalog of the Alma library management service has concluded the first phase of its work. Part of the Alma Community Zone, the Community Catalog comprises metadata records shared by libraries that are using the Alma library management service. The purpose of the Community Catalog is to streamline resource-management processes, including selection, acquisitions, cataloging, and fulfillment. The group's recommendations were governed by the principle that all records contributed to the Community Catalog should be open and that members should be able to share, copy, edit, and redistribute records that are linked to the library's inventory. Owned jointly by the community, the Community Catalog will also enable libraries to contribute records to external systems, such as Ex Libris Primo, or other discovery environments. Alma's early adopters and development partners had an opportunity to review the recommendations during the group's deliberations.

E-resource Advisory Council assisting OCLC in further development of e-resource strategy

(January 19, 2012). OCLC is working with the E-resource Advisory Council, a group of 10 library leaders who have agreed to help guide the cooperative in advancing a new Webscale, electronic resource management strategy. As library investments and patron demands for e-resources continue to grow, libraries need to effectively manage these resources alongside their print materials. OCLC has responded to this change through a strategy that includes adding licensed and open access content to WorldCat, building the knowledge base for e-resources, enhancing resource sharing to allow the sharing of electronic articles, and introducing an entire suite of new services for electronic materials. That suite includes link resolving, acquisitions, and a license manager for subscription, access, license, vendor and rights management.

(January 16, 2012). OCLC announced the launch of OCLC WorldShare License Manager, a new service to help libraries meet the increasing challenges and complexities of electronic resource management. OCLC WorldShare License Manager offers a unique solution in that it brings together the two key features of electronic resource management—knowledge about licenses that govern their purchase and use, and linking technology that connects users to needed content in a single place. Built on the OCLC WorldShare Platform and WorldCat knowledge base, License Manager helps library staff more effectively manage the selection, purchase and availability of databases and e-resources. This new service consolidates link resolution, subscriptions, licenses, vendor information, access and rights management to enable Webscale management, discovery and delivery of licensed and electronic resources. License Manager is supported as a stand-alone service that integrates with other library management systems or can be integrated with OCLC WorldShare Management Services. License Manager resides on the OCLC WorldShare Platform that allows library staff and others to create applications to enhance current features and bridge information to other systems.

And its reporting options help librarians identify the most- and least-used resources in their collections, show the publishers and platforms turned to most often by users, and more. In addition, EBSCONET Usage Consolidation integrates with EBSCO's other services, such as EBSCONET Subscription Management, where usage data is directly available in the library's account so librarians can make well-informed decisions about subscriptions, e-packages, and other e-resources at the point of need and as part of a library's normal workflow.
