Self-charging system interface

Library Systems Newsletter [June 1998]

In order to promote sales of its equipment, 3M Library Systems, vendor of the leading patron self-charging circulation device, has introduced a new interchange protocol between its self-service devices and automated library systems. The product, SIP2, is available without charge to any library automation vendor or library. There is, therefore, no reason why a 3M self-charging device cannot be interfaced with any automated library system if the library presses its vendor to obtain the SIP2 specifications. A few vendors of automated library systems have claimed that they cannot undertake the interface because they are unwilling to enter into an elaborate contractual agreement with 3M. If this was required in the past, no such agreement is required now.
