Free access to court information

Library Systems Newsletter [September 1998]

Many libraries cannot afford LEXIS or Westlaw. They have an option. It is possible to access the Web pages of many state courts by entering www.courts.state.xx.us, where the xx represents the two-character postal code for the state. Alternatively, one can visit the National Center for State Courts for a directory Of state and local courts throughout the nation, and links to their sites. The URL for the Center is www.ncsc.dni.us/court/sites/courts.

The Administrative Office of the U.S. Courts offers links to U.S. District, Bankruptcy, and Appeals Courts through links from a Web map. The URL is www.uscourts.gov.

The U.S. Supreme Court has not implemented a home page, but a searchable database of all of its opinions is available at www.findlaw.com. An alternative is oyez.nwu.edu, a site maintained by Northwestern University.

Several law schools also maintain sites for courts in their jurisdictions.
