Five PC makers control 53 percent of market

There is a dramatic consolidation going on in the PC market according to Computer Reseller News, an industry trade publication. The five largest PC makers increased their share of the market by more than five percentage points to 53 percent from the second quarter of 1997 to the second quarter of 1998. The companies, and their market shares, are Compaq, 14.4 percent; Dell, 14.2 percent; Packard Bell/NEC, 8.5 percent; Gateway, 8.2 percent, and Hewlett-Packard, 7.8 percent. IBM is a distant sixth.
