OCLC to discontinue work-station sales and service

Library Systems Newsletter [June 1999]

OCLC will discontinue sales of workstations, modems, upgrades, add-ons and related hardware, effective June 30, 1999. OCLC will also discontinue maintenance on the M386, 466, and 486-series workstations except in those cases where a maintenance contract has a committed period which extends beyond that date.

OCLC says that it has made the decision to discontinue workstation sales and service because it no longer requires proprietary workstations. Libraries can purchase and maintain workstations less expensively in the general marketplace. It is also seeking to encourage libraries which have seriously outdated equipment to install Pentium level machines with Windows95 or higher.
