Electronic Book '99, the second annual workshop in a series, will be held September 21 and 22 at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) in Gaithersburg, MD. The National Information Standards Organization (NISO) is a co-sponsor.
The workshop will deal with technical innovation and standards for the emerging electronic book industry. It will feature topics such as next generation portable electronic books, web-based electronic books, new e-book enabling technologies, progress on the Open Electronic Book Standard, digital rights management, and accessibility.
The Electronic Book Standard will be a particularly important topic. After seven months of work, the Open E-Book Authoring Group subcommittee completed work on a draft standard, basing it on the same HTML and XML specifications that define the Web. More information about the standard can be found at www.openbook.com.
The registration fee is $225, including workshop materials and lunches. Accommodations at the nearby Gaithersburg Holiday Inn are $90 per night. Workshop registration should be submitted to NIST by September 7.
Electronic registration is available at www.nist.gov/ebook99/. Registration information may also be faxed to Lori Phillips Buckland at (301) 948-2067. The fax should include the name of the conference, full name and address of the registrant, and credit card information. For hotel reservations, call (301) 948-8900.
