Zen drives improve CD-ROM performance

Library Systems Newsletter [October 1999]

CD-ROM drives have become faster and faster over the past several years, but until recently their speed fell far short of that achieved with PC hard drives. Using multiple lasers, Zen Research achieved a breakthrough earlier this year by increasing the speed to 52x, and possibly more in the future. At 52x the CD-ROMs will match many PC hard drives in performance.

Kenwood Technologies manufactures the drives under license from Zen Research. Compaq offers Kenwood's Zen drives in several models of its PCs. CompUSA also sells the drives.
