Hewlett-Packard, which appeared to surrender the low-end UNIX server market to Sun and IBM a year ago, has launched a new effort to become a serious player in the under $15,000 UNIX server market. It has begun shipping its HP9000 L-class servers. The L-1000 will have up to 4.0 GB of memory; the L-2000 will have up to 8.0 GB of memory. Systems will be available in up to four-way processor configurations.
