This inaugural issue of Library Technology Issue is both a new beginning and a continuation. From my involvement as a journalist and analyst for the library technology industry, it continues the more than a decade as the exclusive contributor to Smart Libraries Newsletter, a monthly publication dedicated to developments in the library technology industry. Library Technology Newsletter aims to offer authoritative coverage of the vendors, products, and key people related to the technologies used by libraries. It covers core technology systems including integrated library systems, library services platforms, discovery services, inventory management hardware and software, and related products. Library Technology Newsletter is offered as an open access publication.Individuals or organizations interested in supporting the author are asked to make voluntary donations in lieu of subscription fees. |

Axiell acquires Infor Library and Information Solutions
In a move that further consolidates the global library technology industry, Axiell has entered into an agreement to acquire the Library and Information Solutions division of Infor. This deal will add the V-smart integrated library system and related products to Axiell's already extensive portfolio of library technology products. The scale of the transaction is modest but impacts libraries across many countries and regions. At the time of the announcement, Infor reported 180 library customers. V-smart is a well-established product in the Benelux region, with many customers in Belgium and The Netherlands as well as in Switzerland, France, and Greece. Beyond Europe, V-Smart has been implemented by libraries in the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, and in the United States. |

Clarivate completes the acquisition of ProQuest
Clarivate announced in June 2021 that it would acquire ProQuest in a transaction valued at $5.3 billion. This acquisition, the largest ever in the library technology industry was originally slated to close. Due to additional time needed for regulatory approval from the Federal Trade Commission, the closing date was delayed. Clarivate announced on December 1, 2021 that the deal had closed, implying that it had gained FTC approval. |

Informatics launches Scite.AI in India -- the Next Generation Citation Database. Informatics has launched Scite.AI in India – the next Generation citation database that looks far ahead of traditionally known citation databases. The launch program is scheduled as part of the 6th Library Technology Conclave on the coming Friday, the 7th January 2022, as both physical and online event. [Full Announcement].
Axiell announces agreement to acquire Infor Library and Information Solutions business and expand global presence. Axiell, the world's leading software and services provider for the cultural sector, today announced an agreement to acquire Infor Library & Information Solutions, a business within Infor, the industry cloud company. The acquisition is expected to close in February. The Infor Library & Information Solutions business delivers solutions and services to the library sector and serves more than 180 customers in Australia, Belgium, Canada, France, Greece, the Netherlands, Switzerland, the United Kingdom and the United States. ByWater Solutions at Public Library Association Annual Conference 2022. ByWater Solutions, an open-source community contributor and America's forefront provider of Open Source library technology support, announced today that the team will be heading to Public Library Association Annual Conference in Portland, Oregon. Garfield County Public Library District starts Gentle Nudge. Unique announced that Garfield County Public Library District has started using Gentle Nudge Material Recovery Service. By adding the flagship service from Unique, the Rifle, Colorado community library will keep their materials in circulation and available to their patrons. Gentle Nudge® by Unique will operate on behalf of the GCPLD to recover lost materials and bring patrons back into good standing, while maintaining patron goodwill and preserving the library's investment in their community. Public Libraries and Schools Surpass Half a Billion Digital Book Loans in 2021. As the pandemic persisted in 2021, librarians and educators enabled readers worldwide to borrow 506 million ebooks, audiobooks and digital magazines, a 16% increase over 2020. With a focus on equity of access to books for all, libraries achieved all-time records for circulation while lowering the average cost-per-title borrowed. 2021 also produced a banner year of book sales and earnings to the authors and publishers who supply digital books to libraries. Data was reported by OverDrive, the leading digital reading platform for 76,000 libraries and schools in 94 countries worldwide. [Full Announcement].
Infor wins tender from Clermont-Ferrand libraries. The metropolis of Clermont-Ferrand chooses Infor for its re-computerization. The Métropole de Clermont-Ferrand (300,000 inhabitants) has a public reading network of 19 libraries and a book mobile, supplemented by 3 specialized services, the Heritage Library, the Cinema and Short Film Documentation Center and the Superior School of Art of Clermont Métropole. The network is structured around 7 reading pools, each of them constituting a small network. [Full Announcement].

New MAIN Libraries Catalog Has Arrived. MAIN Libraries, a northern New Jersey shared services consortium of 49 public libraries, hasannounced the launch of a new catalog interface for library users that will empower the searching of physical materials, digital content, and much more. Starting January 10, 2022, library card holders at MAIN member libraries will discover a new catalog website using a product called Aspen by a company named ByWater Solutions. [Full Announcement].
Spokane Public Library launches Patron Point-FOLIO integration. In a market first, Patron Point announced today that Spokane Public Library has launched the company's integration with FOLIO, an open-source library services platform. Since 2019, Spokane Public Library, a John Cotton Dana Library Public Relations Awardwinner, has been using Patron Point as part of their continued commitment to creative and purposeful marketing and patron engagement programs. 2021 Year in Review: Equinox Advances Open Source Initiatives for Libraries. Equinox Open Library Initiative announces the publication of the 2021 Equinox Year in Review. The Year in Review details the advancement of Equinox's programs supporting libraries and open source communities during the 2021 year, including grant programs, fundraising, community engagement, conference presentations, and development and community initiatives with Evergreen, Koha, CORAL, SubjectsPlus, Fulfillment, and VuFind. Patron Point announced that Helen Plum Library, in Lombard, IL, has selected its patron engagement platform to support their ongoing mission of providing their community with access to information, diverse resources, technology and services. ByWater Solutions announces support of Aspen Discovery for Grand County Public Library. ByWater Solutions, America's forefront provider of Open Source library technology support, announced today that they are providing support and hosting services for the Aspen Open Source Discovery system for Grand County Public Library in Utah. Two reports released by EveryLibrary Institute reveals inequity in access to School Libraries, Challenges in Education System; EveryLibrary issues call-to-action about Educators for America Act and School Librarians. This month marks 20 years since President George W. Bush signed the No Child Left Behind Act into law. NCLB created a new framework for education which has remade public education in ways that still impact teaching and learning today. Prior to 2002, standardized testing was less prevalent at all grade levels and there was no standardized report card to measure successful or failing schools across the nation. It is worth remembering that after NCLB came into effect, we have seen a dramatic decrease in the number of school librarians at work for students in many states. The last several years have been a tumultuous time for school libraries. Just how tumultuous has been outlined in two reports recently released by EveryLibrary Institute. [Full Announcement].

Clarivate Announces Change in Leadership Structure. Clarivate announced that as part of its One Clarivate Vision to put even greater focus on its customers and solutions, effective February 1, Gordon Samson will become Chief Product Officer. Samson, who is currently President of the IP Segment, will support the four Clarivate customer verticals in this newly created and focused role. With this change, Mukhtar Ahmed, President of the Science Segment, will be leaving the company. Ahmed will work with Samson on the transition of the Science team and the ProQuest integration until April 1, 2022, then will remain in an advisory role to the company until his departure on October 1, 2022. Antioch goes live as the 110th Solus app of 2021. Solus announced today that Antioch, Illinois has gone live with the Solus app. [Full Announcement].
University of North Alabama Upgrades Its Institutional Repository with Ubiquity Repositories. The end of 2021 saw the launch of University of North Alabama's Repository of Open Access Research (RoOAR) powered by Ubiquity Repositories. After testing various software and repository providers, UNA chose the Ubiquity Repositories platform, which largely outperformed all its competitors. [Full Announcement].
COUNTER has appointed Tasha Mellins-Cohen as the new Project Director. COUNTER has provided the standard that enables the knowledge community to count the use of electronic resources in a consistent, credible and comparable way since its foundation in 2003. Lorraine Estelle has been COUNTER Project Director since 2015 and will be retiring in April 2022. [Full Announcement].
Fresh, Gallery View in Apollo Catalogs. The Apollo® LSP public catalog has a new look. We've added “Gallery View” for search results. This is in addition to the existing List view. Library staff can decide which view to use or allow patrons to choose. This is available immediately at no charge to Apollo customers who have a catalog enhancement option. [Full Announcement].
Soutron Global, Inc. announces merger. Soutron Global announce that Soutron Global, North America, and Soutron Ltd, UK, have joined forces under one banner to scale its global operations, acquire new development capabilities and expand sales offices while maintaining its focus on customer excellence. Graham Beastall, Soutron UK's Managing Director, will retire after decades of dedication and service to the library market. This effort is ably supported by Bloom Equity Partners, a growth equity firm that seeks to partner with founders and CEOs to rapidly scale their technology business with capital and operational expertise. Folger Shakespeare Library selects TIND ILS. TIND, a spin-off from CERN specializing in innovative library software solutions, has been chosen by the Folger Shakespeare Library to implement TIND ILS. Folger is migrating from Ex Libris' Voyager system. [Full Announcement].
ByWater Solutions announces Aspen Discovery 22.01.00 Release. ByWater Solutions announced the first release of 2022 of Aspen Discovery- 22.01.00. In late 2021, ByWater Solutions surveyed our Aspen library partners and asked them about their top priorities and focus areas for 2022 developments did a deeper analysis of support tickets to identify areas of repeat questions and enhancement requests. This release resolves almost 80 of partner tickets involving bugs, developments, and other enhancement suggestions. [Full Announcement].
Record Number of Library Systems Surpass 1 Million Ebook Circulation for 2021. A total of 121 public libraries and consortia based in seven countries and from 37 U.S. states each loaned more than one million ebooks, audiobooks and digital magazines in 2021. This milestone was achieved in partnership with OverDrive, the leading digital reading platform for libraries and schools worldwide and creator of the award-winning Libby reading app. Twenty-two library systems joined the Million+ Circulation status for the first time in 2021. The 121 Million+ Circulation libraries are based in the U.S., Canada, Singapore, Australia, New Zealand, the United Kingdom and Germany. [Full Announcement].
Gale and California State Library Partner to Provide K-12 Students and Educators Access to STEAM Digital Resources. The California State Library and Riverside County Office of Education have partnered with Gale, part of Cengage Group, to provide California's more than six-million K-12 students and over 300,000 educators with access to science, technology, engineering, arts and math digital resources from Gale. These new resources are part of California's K-12 Online Content Project and are available at all schools (10k+) and public libraries (1.1k+) throughout California to support and strengthen STEAM learning. EBSCO Information Services Opens Submissions for the 2022 EBSCO Solar Grant. Submissions are now open for the 2022 EBSCO Solar grant program from EBSCO Information Services. For the seventh consecutive year, EBSCO is accepting applications for grants that will fund solar installations at libraries around the world. As part of the 2022 EBSCO Solar initiative, EBSCO will be making a total of $300,000 in grants available. The grants will help winning libraries to offset their expenses by incorporating solar power. EBSCO introduced the EBSCO Solar grant program in 2016 and has given libraries nearly $1.5 million in grants. [Full Announcement].

FOLIO Library Services Platform Launches Kiwi Release. The FOLIO Open Source Community has issued its latest named release as the platform continues to add features and functionality to the library services platform (LSP). The Kiwi Release includes platform updates and integration improvements in addition to user experience (UX) improvements and features. The Kiwi Release offers platform enhancements that provide librarians with a more efficient user experience in the FOLIO platform. These enhancements include updates made to cataloging where libraries can now manage MARC holdings in FOLIO. Improvements to acquisitions provide the LSP with even more flexibility when creating new orders via GOBI®. The Kiwi Release also made improvements to circulation by providing improved logging related to patron notice processing as to capture all errors and add them to circulation log. Ireland Chooses BDS Metadata. The Republic of Ireland's public libraries will use BDS metadata starting this year. The Local Government Management Agency awarded the five-year contract. Civica's cloud Spydus library management software will deliver the BDS metadata to libraries. [Full Announcement].

First Nations Information Connection Libraries Go Live on Koha with ByWater Support. ByWater Solutions, America's forefront provider of Open Source library technology support, announced that First Nations Information Connection Libraries in Alberta, Canada is now live on Koha ILS with ByWater Support. Elsevier appoints Laura Hassink as Managing Director, STM Journals. Elsevier, a global leader in research publishing and information analytics, is pleased to announce the appointment of Laura Hassink as the new Managing Director for STM Journals, succeeding Philippe Terheggen, who has retired at the end of 2021 after a distinguished 30-year career at Elsevier. Patron Point announced that Bellwood Public Library, in Bellwood, Illinois, has selected its patron engagement platform to support the library's mission of encouraging and supporting the personal, educational, and professional needs of the community with emphasis on reading and learning at all ages. Spokane (Washington) Public Library Adopts the FOLIO Platform. Spokane (Washington) Public Library became the first public library in North America to use the FOLIO Library Services Platform. The library uses Index Data to host and support the open source platform for its six branches and community of 210,000 residents. Averaging over two million circulations per year, it is among the largest installations of FOLIO to date. [Full Announcement].

Austin, TX - Literati, a book subscription company for readers of all ages, announced the acquisition of Follett Book Fairs. The Catalyst Koha team is excited to announce that Auckland University of Technology has officially gone live with the Koha Library Management System. EBSCO Information Services is introducing a new German-language resource to support researchers across the globe. Newcastle City Public Library Selects Vega LX, Polaris Leap, and Innovative Mobile. Gale Digital Scholar Lab innovates with new interface and enhanced analysis tools to better support teaching and learning.
