OCAD University's Dorothy H. Hoover Library joins the OCLC Research Library Partnership

07 December 2022. OCAD University is the largest and most comprehensive art, design, and media university in Canada, founded in 1876 and based in the heart of Toronto. OCAD University is a community of bold, curious, and compassionate artists, designers, and scholars who are imagining and creating a joyful, equitable, and sustainable world. The OCAD U Library houses more than 78,000 books, over 750 print journals, over 3,800 videos, 675,000 eBooks, 56,000 electronic periodicals. The Library collection also includes thousands of streaming videos, images, and other digital objects, as well as special collections such as one of the largest zine collections in Canada. The print collection is predominately composed of visual art and design publications, whereas science and social sciences subject areas are more strongly represented within the Library's collection of digital resources. The University Archives is under the management of the Library and is responsible for the safekeeping of official records that document OCAD University and its predecessor bodies' legacy and contribution to art education and student life in Ontario since 1876.

The University just launched their next six-year academic plan with an emphasis on teaching, learning, and research: www.ocadu.ca/asp.

"Our library mission and priorities, centering the student journey, and supporting teaching, learning, decolonization, and equity, are in alignment with the University's new academic plan," said Tony White, University Librarian. "This summer, OCADU joined Omni, a shared online catalog among 18 university libraries in Ontario. Strong collaborative networks like OCLC's Research Library Partnership are critical for supporting our community of artists, designers, and scholars."

The OCLC Research Library Partnership supports focused programming and research in four areas crucial to research libraries:

  • Research support
  • Unique and distinctive collections
  • Resource sharing
  • Next generation metadata

Across these four areas, the RLP seeks to support libraries in an evolving environment and to advance equity, diversity, and inclusion efforts. The RLP currently comprises 125 Partner institutions around the world.
