With the increase in availability of online services, students and faculty expect lectures to be on-demand. Even if classes are in person, students still expect to use online tools," revealed Stephen Kemsley, Manager, User Experience Design, Clarivate, in our latest webinar. As librarians and professionals in the field of education, it's crucial to stay on top of the ever-evolving landscape of student dynamics. On May 21, six webinar panelists gathered to discuss findings from the latest Clarivate interviews and surveys, which uncovered new student challenges and expectations.

From December 2023 to January 2024, the Clarivate research team interviewed 15 faculty instructors, 12 librarians, and 12 students to see how the dramatic changes brought about by the pandemic have changed their lives. Clarivate also collected 54 survey responses on this topic from faculty instructors and 140 responses from students. Interview participants were largely from the United States, with one instructor from the UK and 4 students from India.

Key findings included:

  • Approximately 70% of undergraduate students live off-campus
  • 20% of the students reported never/rarely using library services
  • Digital natives aren't necessarily technology experts and need help adapting their technical knowledge to databases and research tools

Elaborating on these findings and more, the webinar panelists shared their creative efforts in engaging students through library initiatives. These included:

  1. Discoveries related to Tulane University's student engagement and the financial pressures they face
  2. Behind-the-scenes insights into launching a "Liaison Library Program" at Vermont State University
  3. Unexpected benefits experienced by neurodivergent students as a result of service improvements at Karl Mundt Library, Dakota State University
  4. Indiana University of Pennsylvania's ways to help students through special collection projects
