Clarivate Plc (NYSE: CLVT), a leading global provider of transformative intelligence, the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE) and the Higher Education Press of China today released the Engineering Fronts 2024 report which identifies the most active areas in engineering research and development. Launched at a ceremony in Beijing, this is the eighth annual collaborative report among the three organizations.

An engineering front is defined as a key forward-looking direction that is leading and exploratory. It significantly influences the future of engineering science and technology and serves as an important guide for fostering innovation.

Engineering Fronts 2024 identified 92 global engineering research fronts and 92 engineering development fronts in nine fields, aligned to the corresponding academic divisions under the CAE, which are: Mechanical and vehicle engineering; Information and electronic engineering; Chemical, metallurgical, and materials engineering; Energy and mining engineering; Civil, hydraulic, and architectural engineering; Environmental and light textile engineering; Agriculture; Medicine and health; Engineering management.

The engineering research fronts focus on theoretical exploration and are identified using citation data from Web of Science as well as nominations by experts in China's engineering research institutions. The engineering development fronts focus on the practical application of engineering science and technology and are identified by analysis of patent data in Derwent Innovation as well as nominations by industry experts in China.

Artificial intelligence (AI) continues to influence many engineering fronts this year. For example, one engineering front focuses on the research on the optimization of engineering management based on generative AI. In the field of medicine and health, an engineering development front centers on AI-assisted early cancer screening and diagnosis.
