Indiana Educational Resource Center Selects KLAS

In March, the Indiana Educational Resource Center (IERC) based at the Indiana School for the Blind installed KLAS version 5.7. The IERC is a centralized depository, providing Braille and large print textbooks, aids and equipment, and other specialized materials to eligible blind and visually handicapped students throughout the state of Indiana. Teachers place orders with the IERC, which then prepares, produces or purchases the needed materials. These materials are sent to the schools and returned to the IERC when the student no longer needs them. The IERC also tracks the funding for and eligibility of students registered to receive their services.

The IERC's patron data was converted from an Access database, while the information on textbooks, previously kept in an elaborate card file, is being entered by hand. The IERC needs to track items sent to schools for the use of students at a teacher's request. The KLAS order processing capability allows users to enter orders sent in by teachers, link those orders with the students the materials are intended for, and create a pick list in shelf location order for processing.

The IERC installed a Sun Enterprise Ultra 10S with a Solaris operating system as the KLAS database server in their existing office network environment. Staff use Pentium processor Windows 95 workstations to operate in client-server mode.
