The Humphress Group of Windermere, Florida, and Precision Computer Service of Calhoun, Georgia have officially joined forces to do business as a unified company, Surpass Software.
The Humphress Group created the original version of a library automation software product called Surpass in 1985. Founder Danny Humphress recalls, "The name 'Surpass' was a code name for the project. Our goal was not only to meet our competitors' efforts, but also to literally 'surpass' them in every way."
As of today Surpass Software products have automated over 1,000 primary and secondary school media centers, as well as a number of small public and corporate libraries. Now these facilities can offer their patrons the easiest, most helpful services available from instantly locating materials to accessing reviews written by other patrons.
Precision Computer Service has been marketing Surpass products for several years. Jarrett Volzer, president of sales and marketing, is enthusiastic about the firm's plans: "By joining forces we can really market, deliver and service Surpass products to their fullest. Any library or media center that's automating for the first time or upgrading from an old DOS-based system should definitely look into Surpass Software. We'll not only surpass our competitors in cost savings – we'll surpass them in support service as well, in everything from providing retrospective conversion services and implementing their new software to providing the best technical support services in the business."
Mr. Humphress, president of development, explains, "Our two main modules are Surpass Central, which the library staff uses for everyday cataloging and all aspects of circulation control, and Surpass Safari, which lets patrons locate materials instantly. One particular benefit our clients appreciate is how easy it is to customize reports with Surpass."
In fact, Library Technology Reports says "customizability is the hallmark of Surpass." Respected software reviewer ZDnet.com recently gave Surpass its highest rating. Speaking directly to library administrators, ZDnet.com said, "This neatly integrated database application handles your materials list, patron register, and circulation ... [including] reserves, renewals, holds, and more with the fully customizable local policy options.... [You can] use the clear reports to monitor usage and keep current on losses, late fines, and other problem areas.... Here's a well-designed package for MLS professionals and additional duty library managers alike."
Surpass Software also markets several other software and hardware products that integrate smoothly with its system, which means library administrators can enjoy true one-stop automation shopping.
