Surpass Software is now bundling Surpass Central with Surpass Safari and offering them at a reduced price to libraries with 5,000 or fewer volumes. The bundle will sell for just $995, so a small library can now have a fully automated system with both circulation and catalog for under $1,000. This represents significant savings over the regular $1,750 cost of these programs. The programs are only limited in the size of the collection they will handle and are otherwise fully functional. Customers purchasing the low-cost bundle will still get all the power, flexibility, and benefits of each program.
Surpass Central is the core module of the Surpass library automation family of products. It encompasses circulation, administration, cataloging, ID card creation, and report generation. Some highlight features of Surpass Central are Easy Authority, which provides consistency when cataloging; an easy-to-use, yet very powerful, custom report generator that allows saving to HTML, Excel, and other formats; and special features for importing Accelerated Reader test information. Central also has integrated photo ID card making features.
Surpass Safari is the Windows-based OPAC for the system. It has a browser-like interface and an impressive array of features including simple and advanced searching, access to recommended reading lists with optional photos or graphics, a book bag feature for creating and saving custom bibliographies, a patron-written book review feature, support for Web links and local document links, access to the facility calendar, bulletins, and more. It also allows patrons to check the status of their own accounts and place reserve requests on materials. Safari's search results page gives suggestions for searches on similar materials and even lists titles that other patrons checked out at the same time as the current title.
